Will you take up the challenge to be a Mater Healthy Hero?

Will you take up the challenge to be a Mater Healthy Hero? Mater Healthy Hero is a six week health and wellbeing challenge held during May—June 2012 that helps raise funds for obesity research at Mater.

Getting started is easy—register for free, decide that bad habit you’re going to give up (or what good habit you want to start), personalise your online fundraising page and ask your family, friends and work mates to sponsor you.

Increasing exercise or improving your diet can have huge health benefits including reducing the risk of life-threatening and life-changing illness like cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Take up the challenge to become a Healthy Hero, make a lifestyle change for the better and ask your family and friends to sponsor your challenge and help raise funds for obesity research at Mater.

Obesity is a common problem affecting millions of people world-wide, but it’s the health risks associated with obesity—like type 2 diabetes and heart disease—that Mater Medical Research Institute (MMRI) Associate Professor Jon Whitehead and his team are trying to prevent by manipulating fat cells. Everyone has fat cells, but in overweight or obese people these fat cells become inflamed, making them ‘angry fat cells’ that fail to regulate metabolism properly.

By becoming a Healthy Hero you will be helping MMRI identify mechanisms to promote generation of new ‘fit fat cells’ and tackle obesity.

Getting started is easy— register for free at www.materhealthyheroes.org.au, decide what bad habit you’re going to give up (or what good habit you want to start!), personalise your online fundraising page and ask your family, friends and workmates to sponsor you. Then take up the challenge for 6 weeks during May—June and not only will you feel healthier, but you could also win some great prizes!
