Organic farming was identified as the top Australian growth industry for the second consecutive year by business information analysts, IBISWorld.
The annual report again names organic farming as the number one growth industry in Australia, ahead of video games, electricity distribution, motorcycle dealing and domestic airlines.
Driven by rising consumer awareness of good health and the environmental impacts of food production, it is projected that the organic farming industry will grow by 14 per cent in 2011.
IBISWorld says that organic farmers are benefiting as a result of higher demand for organic produce – 51.4 per cent of which is made up of fruit and vegetables.
The report also predicts a decline in price of certified organic produce as goods become more readily available which will be a benefit to the consumer.
The Australian Organic Market Report, which is based on an industry-wide survey and published every two years by the Biological Farmers of Australia (BFA), reports equally positive trends.
