The Federal Government should fix up and re-start, not shelve, its insulation program, the Australian Conservation Foundation said today.
“Cutting the program would leave insulation workers and businesses out on a limb and would mean tens of thousands of families miss out on making their homes more energy efficient,” said ACF climate change manager Tony Mohr.
“What the government should do is set a clear timetable for the program to fixed and restarted before this year’s election.”
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has established a task force on energy efficiency that is currently seeking advice and feedback from stakeholders.
“Shelving the insulation program would cut across the government’s energy efficiency task force consultation process and would be at odds with the Prime Minister’s stated intention to make Australia energy smart,” Mr Mohr said.
“In the race to establish a low-carbon economy Australia risks tripping over the start line. Australian families and industry deserve better.”
