Question
I have many symptons of Candida and besides Inner Health Plus is there anything else I should take/do? I have heard Threelac is very good do you have this and what are your views?
Naturopath's Answer
There are many different approaches to Candida. Generally when there is an overgrowth in the balance of digestive bacteria it is considered that a three-tiered approach is taken:
1. Weed: eradicate the overgrowth or diminish it to safe levels with the use of antifungal, antibacterial and antiparasitic herbs. Many companies make products that have this function. Please speak to our instore Naturopaths about their availability and suitability to your symptoms.
2. Seed: this is the step when you take inner health or products like Threelac. These beneficial bacteria supplements provide the basis of new colonies of bacteria. If you introduce them after the weeding stage you have a better chance of them adhering, multiplying and setting up colonies as they don't have to struggle against the growths that are already there. I generally start with Inner Health but then move to other products which contain different strains of bacteria such as Synbac and cytobifidus. Unfortunately I am only aware of Threelac being available for sale over the internet.
3. Feed: this is the vital step where you foster a lifestyle that feeds and nourishes the colonies of good bacteria you have introduced. This is achieved not only through beneficial fibres and good dietary choices but also through healthy stress and coping techniques and avoidance of drugs, alcohol and other predisposing factors.
Dysbiosis (disordered digestive bacteria) which is seen in Candida is increasingly common and is treated effectively by Complementary health practitioners. You may wish to visit a Naturopath who can assess your individual case and symptoms and devise a treatment plan tailored to you.
