Naturopath's Answer

We are going camping over Christmas and I am looking for an insect repellant safe for a 8 month old baby and myself who is 22 weeks pregnant. Mainly to control mosquitos and sand flies!

We stock several Natural insect repellents that would be appropriate for your situation. These repellents are based on insect repelling essential oils such as citronella, lavender etc. which in low concentrations are safe for infants and pregnancy.

I personally recommend the use of either:

  • The Natralia Nourish repellent lotion
  • Herbon Natural Insect repellent lotion
  • Natures Lifestyle Insect repellent

All three of these products have suitable ingredients. It is important to note that essential oils are not safe to be consumed.

You may also want to look at your intake of Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) which is excreted through our skin and acts as an effective insect repellent. You can supplement with this vitamin through the use of a Multi B or multivitamin Formula or as a individual vitamin. There are liquid child and adult formulas available for internal use called Mozi free. Supplementation of this nutrient is recommended to commence one to two weeks prior to exposure or travel.
