Cellulite is not considered to be a disease or health condition but instead the physical appearance of fat deposits on the limbs and body resembling dimples. The condition is more common in women as it is thought that the structure of female connective tissue in these areas is slightly different to that of males.
Underneath the dermis and epidermis are three specific layers of fat. Cellulite tends to develop in the subcutaneous fat layers. This layer of fat is unique in its structure compared to the other layers because its fatty parts are structured into specific chambers by strands of linked tissue around it. The subcutaneous fat layer in a woman is organised into large upright chambers allowing fat to be stored. In men, these chambers are organised into small slanting units. These store smaller fat quantities and are not likely to form cellulite.
Hormones and aging may also play a role in the formation of cellulite. There are many creams, lotions and tablets that claim to be able to treat cellulite. Most of these products claim to work via their action of tightening the skin. This action does little to address the fatty deposits and underlying connective tissue structure which lie at the heart of cellulite.
I am of the opinion that there is no magical cure for cellulite however there are several lifestyle and dietary practices that you can adopt that decrease the appearance and occurrence of cellulite and make you feel better about yourself. Below I have listed my top 10.
1. Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
2. Exercising increases circulation which can aid in the appearance of cellulite, move lymphatic fluid and decrease swelling. Exercise will also aid in burning fat.
3. Eat a diet that is high in fresh fruit and vegetables, balanced meat and grain intake and contributes a healthy source of essential fatty acids (good fats). Good quality fats are essential for good quality hormonal production and metabolic support. People tend to shy away from fats only to miss out on the various benefits that a good quality fat can provide.
4. Try dry skin brushing or exfoliation. Rubbing and increasing circulation in the areas where you have cellulite may aid in decreasing its appearance.
5. Apply a cream that is firming and increases circulation, I recommend the Weleda cellulite lotion. This formula contains essential oils and plant compounds to reduce the appearance of cellulite.
6. Increase your intake of Vitamin C and antioxidant containing foods. Antioxidants inhibit cell damage and may stop the aging and deterioration of skin elasticity seen in Cellulite.
7. If you think your hormones might be contributing to your condition or if you have hormonal symptoms consult a practitioner and obtain some hormonal balancing advice.
8. Avoid turning to foods that comfort you when you feel down about your appearance.
9. Remember that most females have cellulite. It’s never as bad as you think and probably the only person that notices it is you.
10. Practice positive affirmations about yourself and your self worth.
Controlling lifestyle factors will have the largest influence on the appearance and occurrence of cellulite.
