I am suffering from Tinea Versicolor. The doctors have presribed me oral tablets but they haven't worked. I'm using Selsun shampoo every night but still no luck. Is there anything else I can use? And is there anything that will help make the white spots less noticable?Naturopath's Answer
Tinea versicolor is a fungal skin infection that is particularly prevalent in hot and humid environments. The fungus causes a discolouration of skin. The fungus implicated in Tinea versicolor is Malassezia furfur. This fungus or yeast is detectable on most people’s skin. The question that then arises is how does a naturally occurring fungus overgrow?
From a Naturopathic perspective fungal infections and your susceptibility to them are caused by a dysfunction of the immune system and or nutrient deficiencies. Central to our immune function is our overall digestive health. This may be an area you wish to discuss with your Naturopath.
General supplements and lifestyle modification to improve your immune response will not only decrease your susceptibility to an infection but may also decrease the severity and duration of the infection.
Current medical treatment usually focuses on the application of a topical antifungal agent such as the Selsun Blue you currently use (Dandruff is also considered a fungal infection hence the use of selsun blue topically). Within my clientele I generally utilise a protocol of herbal antifungal agents (internal and external application), bowel and digestive system treatment and immune support.
Herbs you may use internally include: Echinacea, Pau D'arco, Garlic, Goldenseal, Wormwood and Oregano oil. Some of these herbs are not suitable with certain medications, pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Several sources suggest that the presence of Tinea versicolor may be linked to a deficiency of several fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K). The use of Vitamin D and Vitamin A will improve your immune response and have a direct action on the skin. I generally recommend the use of a cod liver oil supplement which has both of these nutrients naturally occurring in a base of essential fatty acids (useful for their anti inflammatory action). Many people eradicate sources of fats from their diet without realising the essential nutrients that quality fats provide for your body.
The use of a Zinc and Vitamin C supplement such as Zinc Fix by Ethical Nutrients will also address any nutrient deficiencies which may contribute to an ineffective immune response.
The pigmentation changes that occur with Tinea versicolor will eventually disappear once the initial fungal infection has diminished. Keeping the skin dry and clean will prevent further re-infection. Avoid tanning or direct exposure of your skin to UV rays whilst the infection is still present. The infected skin will not tan and will increase the pigmentation differences in your skin.
