Question

I suspect my son needs some iron supplements. He is 18 months old and still breastfed, however, I have always suffered from low iron and not been taking my supplements. Can I safely provide him with supplements? I don't want to get a blood test done. Do you supply something safe for his age? I have been reading about Aceticum Acid to help with my recent gastro syptoms and anemia, and my breastfed son has loose stools and I suspect stomach aches and low iron also. Is this safe to take "just in case"?

If there is a chance that you are Iron deficient also it is worth supplementing yourself and supplying Iron to your son through your breast milk as well as supplementing him directly.

If your son is displaying any excessive tiredness, easy bruising, constant colds and flus or poor wound healing it may be beneficial to have a blood test done to correctly identify his deficiency.

If he seems relatively fine and you believe he is only partly deficient you may wish to try a product like Kindervital suitable for his age group. This natural supplement provides iron and other beneficial nutrients. This supplement will not constipate your child and offers easily absorbed iron in a tasty liquid.

You may also wish to consider the use of digestive enzymes for your own chronic iron problems. I have found that supplementing people in your position with Betaine Hydrochloride (Protein Digest Aid /Natures Sunshine) greatly influences the body’s ability to extract and absorb Iron from your diet. The spleen relies on this enzyme to break down red blood cells and as such plays a vital role in Hemaglobin transport around the body.
